Fire Island Pines - “Oh Therese” live in St Minver, February 2011

Fire Island Pines - “Heaven Until You Say”

Six-piece UK band Fire Island Pines’ debut release Bratislava EP (VULP-0027) comes from Anton Rothschild (vocals and guitar; he previously released one of his solo albums, The Year of the Kitten, on Vulpiano Records in 2010), and “a band of Cornish indie wanderers”, Andy (drums), Ben (trumpet, flugel horn, percussion), Seamus (bass, glockenspiel), Simon (guitar), and Tom (guitar, vocals). The EP contains five tracks which each serve to signal the talent the band has for weaving smooth, compelling - and nd sometimes groovable, as in the case of “Heaven Till You Say” - songs.
From their press release: “Together [Fire Island Pines] have woven Anton’s bleak lyrics into a jaunty, uplifting sonic tapestry punctuated by shimmering trumpet lines and an unholy tri-guitar wall-of-jangle. The result; a distinctive yet accessible bittersweet pop parcel, is showcased to devastating effect on their debut release Bratislava…Fire Island Pines will be playing live throughout 2011 with plans to release a full-length album before the year is out…” Cover art is by BreeAnn Veenstra.

Following the single release of the same title, VULP-0026 is Richey Hackett’s eighth album Flawed Above Bored. Described by Hackett as much more stripped down than his previous release, Flawed finds Hackett rising out of the darkness of Void Songs and into lighter atmosphere even when the subject matter is heavy, with a strong sense of melody (“Breakdown in Communication”) and moving guitar work (“Modern Paranoia”, “Never Gonna Be Famous”). Stand-out tracks here include “Modern Paranoia”, “Flawed Above Bored”, and the churning, mysterious “To Bring Me Around”. Album cover designed by Ben Enser.

Le Fils des Trois Mousquetaires - “time and space”

VULP-0023 is British synth pop/rock artist J.G. Hackett’s third album, Trans-Racial-Impression. In an era of exciting electronic experimentation combined with nods to retro synth styles, this album not only fits in but goes more than a little beyond expectation. With catchy beats and rhythm (“State of Flux”, “Too Many Times”) appearing alongside more harrowing numbers (“Johnny Drank His Own Future”) and truly stand-out tracks that deserve repeating, the previously highlighted “Dereliction” and moving closers “Where To Next?” and more organic sounding “Epitaph of the Architect”. The first album release for Vulpiano Records in the new year is one I’m quite proud of.
